How to Plan a Henna Night: Programme, Traditions and Checklist

The henna night (“kına gecesi”) is the most emotional and colourful evening before a Turkish wedding. Symbolising the bride’s farewell to her family home, the tradition today ranges from small gatherings at home to celebrations in a hall with hundreds of guests. This guide brings together how a henna night is organised, how the programme flows, the steps of the henna ceremony and a preparation checklist.

When is the henna night held?

Traditionally on the night before the wedding. Couples who would rather not be tired on the wedding day, and who want to enjoy the two events separately, now often plan the henna night a few days or even a week earlier. For a henna night in a hall, the date follows the venue’s availability; if it will be held at the same venue as the wedding, booking both dates together makes things easier.

At home or in a hall?

A henna night at home offers an intimate setting with close family and neighbours, but as the guest list grows, seating, refreshments and music become limiting. A hall is the better choice when:

  • The number of guests exceeds what a home can hold.
  • Themed decor, a stage and professional sound and lighting are wanted.
  • A seated dinner or a catered programme is planned.
  • A bridal preparation room and a suitable space for photographs are needed.

When choosing a hall for a henna night, a slightly smaller and warmer space than the wedding hall usually works best; the henna crowd is smaller than the wedding crowd and the evening is shared with a closer circle.

How the henna night programme flows

The programme varies by venue and family, but a typical evening runs like this:

  1. Welcome: guests are received and refreshments are served, with the music kept at an easy tempo.
  2. The bride’s entrance: the bride enters in her henna outfit (a traditional “bindallı” or a modern henna dress), usually with a red veil.
  3. Entertainment: folk dances, performance groups or a band; regional dances, the “halay” and lively rhythms are the heart of this part.
  4. The henna ceremony: the lights are dimmed, the bride’s mother and close relatives enter with candles and the henna tray while henna songs are sung. The bride is seated on a chair in the centre and a red veil is placed over her head.
  5. Applying the henna: the bride keeps her palm closed until her mother or mother-in-law places a gold coin in it. The henna is then applied, traditionally by her mother or mother-in-law, and a small pouch or glove is placed over the hand.
  6. The groom’s arrival: in many families the groom joins after the ceremony and the couple dance together.
  7. Closing: dancing continues and guests receive henna night favours such as small henna pouches and Turkish delight.

What the henna ceremony needs

  • Henna, an ornate or silver henna tray and candles.
  • A red veil and the bride’s henna outfit.
  • A decorated chair or ceremony area for the bride.
  • A pouch or glove for the hennaed hand.
  • Favours for guests: small henna pouches, Turkish delight and little gifts.
  • A playlist of henna songs or live music.

Outfit and theme

The bindallı is the most traditional choice: a velvet gown with metallic embroidery in red, burgundy, purple or navy. Modern henna dresses and kaftan styles are also popular. The theme should match the outfit: red and gold for a traditional evening, pastels or a single-colour palette for a modern one, repeated through the decor. For a henna night in a hall, the themed decor, stage and lighting are planned with the venue’s team.

Refreshments and menu

The henna night menu can be lighter than the wedding menu. In a hall there are two basic options: a seated dinner or cocktail-style refreshments. Turkish delight, nuts, fruit and desserts are part of the tradition, and at a venue with its own kitchen the menu is set together according to the guest count and the time of the evening.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days before the wedding is the henna night held?

Traditionally the night before; today many couples hold it a few days or a week earlier. In a hall, the date follows the venue’s availability.

Who applies the henna?

Traditionally the bride’s mother or mother-in-law, and the bride opens her palm only when a gold coin is placed in it. The ritual varies from family to family.

Do men attend the henna night?

Once a women-only evening, henna nights are now mostly mixed; the groom and male guests usually join after the henna ceremony. The decision rests entirely with the families.
